Yogyakarta Videos

Four informative DVD’s by a young filmmaker from Yogyakarta. They cost $35 each, which includes postage and handling.

1. Iche - Sate Sate. This is about a day in the life of a female sate seller. It follows her around Kota Gede and includes an interview.

2. Pak Kusir Andhong. Meet the andhong driver early in the morning and follow his journey from Kota Gede to Beringharjo market. There is an interesting interview about the nature of his work.

3. Nelayan. Watch Pak Sungkono set out for the day's fishing at 3am. This video traces his work for the day and includes an interview. This video was the runner-up in the Indonesian film festival short films competition in 2007 in Melbourne.

4. Penari Cilik- Adit, Dancer at Prambanan. Spend a day with a 12 year old male dancer as he has dance instruction, plays with his mates, gets ready for the performance and participates in the actual performance with gamelan music and great shots of the ancient Hindu temple near Yogya; Prambanan. Also learn about the story of the Ramayana, one of the most famous Hindu stories enacted in Indonesia.

All videos are spoken in Indonesian with English sub-titles.

Duration is about 20 minutes.

They can be used in Primary school to Year 12 depending on your learning tasks.

DVD’s include question sheets and the narration in Indonesian and English.

Ikut Mudik! A Journey to Yogyakarta $79.95

This new DVD by Daniel Bradbury, a teacher of Indonesian and a documentary filmmaker who loves photography and the outdoors, is a wonderful new resource for Indonesian language teaching and learning,

Ikut Mudik! is the fourth in a series of documentaries capturing the real-life stories of people through Indonesia. In a warm and fun manner, this story reveals aspects of Indonesia’s multi-religious society, and in particular the relationship between Muslim and Christian communities. Follow the experiences of Pak Sam and his family (who are Christian) as they take the journey from Jakarta to Yogyakarta to celebrate the end of Ramadan with their Muslim relatives. All narration is in Indonesian.

Along with the DVD, there is also a CD with printable worksheets. Ikut Mudik! can provide a valuable resource for all levels of Secondary Indonesian studies.

Fenty’s Day A story from Halmahera $49.95

Fenty’s Day is a short documentary, following a day in the life of a young 10 year old girl living in Tobelo, Halmahera, North Maluku, in Indonesia. Follow Fenty to school, to the market and around her home to learn about her life in this remote part of Indonesia. Fenty narrates each activity in short, simple yet effective Indonesian sentences.

This DVD contains 3 options for using subtitles. It is recommended to show the English-subtitled version first, then as a follow-up show it again with Indonesian subtitles, pausing each scene to see if the students can guess what Fenty is saying. Students will amaze themselves with what they know! A third version is provided without subtitles for more advanced students

Desaku Bagus! A Story from Sulawesi $59.95

Desaku Bagus! Is a short documentary about a brother and sister Nadariska and Rizal, around 10-12 years old, who live in Kalumpang, a remote village in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. See fascinating scenery as we follow the children who talk about their lives, wash, clean, or ride to school up the river on a motorized canoe and go on many adventures around this remote part of rural Indonesia. Nadariska and Rizal narrate each activity in short, simple Indonesian sentences.

Kotaku Hebat! An adventure in Jakarta $69.95

Kotaku Hebat is an amazing journey around Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital city. Follow Iwan and Fena, two teenagers, as they spend a day travelling around this city of contrasts. Go up MONAS and see the views of the city, ride the BusWay, eat at the roadside food vendors, visit Taman Mini, and learn how Martaba is made… maybe even grab a bargain at the market. Iwan and Fena narrate each activity in short, simple Indonesian sentences. Out-takes are also included.

Also available is the Lihat Ini series of Indonesian DVDs released in 2008

The Lihat Ini series is a flexible, interactive tool, easily integrated into your teaching programme. Suitable for students at all levels, they cover a diverse range of topics that allow you to tell interesting and engaging stories about Indonesia while developing your students’ language skills.

The core of each Lihat Ini DVD is a 10 to 23 minute documentary style video encompassing aspects of Indonesian daily life, culture, environment, economy, geography and history.

There is a choice of Indonesian or English subtitles with the option of an Indonesian language voice over.

Each DVD includes a slideshow derived from the documentary. There is a choice of Indonesian-English, English-Indonesian or Indonesian-Indonesian subtitles. The option of Indonesian language voice over is provided.

Complete transcripts of the narration are included as printable pdf files. Each sentence is numbered. English, Indonesian and English/Indonesian versions are provided. Purchase of the DVDs grants you the use of these documents within your classroom.

To fully realise the potential of the Lihat Ini series effective use of the remote control of the classroom dvd player is required. The series is much more than just an Indonesian language video series.

Peternakan Sapi Perah di Jawa Price: $29.95

We spend an afternoon with a smallholder dairy in East Java. The dairy farmer and his family have six cows and various other livestock. The animals are kept in stalls and are fed a variety of feedstuffs, much of which is sourced from local vegetable markets. Milking is done by hand. The dvd enables students to obtain an understanding of the animal production system in Indonesia and some appreciation of the life of the smallholder animal producer.

Intensively farmed with high labour input, the production of tomatoes from planting to harvest and packing is depicted within the dvd. Tomato production is typical of much of Indonesian vegetable production and agriculture in general. The dvd provides an insight into the not only agricultural production but also the working lives of much of the Indonesian population. Even with economic development, most Indonesians continue to work directly in agriculture, the majority as landless labourers.


Perjalanan naik Kereta Api ke Malang Price: $29.95

Lebaran is a time when it is important for Indonesians to return to their family home. This dvd is about a train trip from Jakarta to Malang in East Java. The train departs from Jakarta Central Station in the late afternoon. All the bustle and excitement of an overnight train trip is portrayed. The morning finds the train speeding through the East Java countryside. The pleasant and comfortable journey ends with arrival at the railway station in Malang, and the finding of transport for the final leg of the journey.

It is dark. Dawn is still an hour away. We travel by colt to the local market. Here we wander through the market observing the wide variety of fruit, vegetables and other products offered for sale. The dvd introduces not only a large vocabulary of fruit and vegetables but also provides an insight into a traditional morning market.

Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia is a huge sprawling and congested city. It is the centre of government, finance and business in Indonesia. In the dvd we explore the city, with its traffic and congestion. Jakarta is a great place to shop from sophisticated malls to street stalls. We visit the National Monument and travel on the new Busway through central Jakarta.

In the afternoon we visit Sunda Kelapa and the port of Tanjung Priok. The historical precinct of Old Jakarta is always worth a visit and as night falls on Jakarta, we go to one of the many of the roadside warung areas that spring up at night.

Yogyakarta has been central to Javanese culture and political power for many centuries. This is reflected in the many historical sites that exist within the Yogyakarta region. None is more spectacular than Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world.

Borobudur is a major tourist attraction and we explore the history and the meaning of this mighty construction. It was lost for centuries and rediscovered in the early 19th century while the British ruled the Dutch East Indies, during the Napoleonic occupation of the Netherlands.

Two versions of the Borobudur video are provided. The longer version discusses more of the spiritual underpinnings to the meaning of Borobudur.

Not far from Borobudur is Candi Prambanan, the major Hindu temple complex in Indonesia, reflecting the waves of religious and cultural influences that permeated Javanese life. Beautiful in its own right, the temple complex gives some feeling of the economic and political power that existed within Java in the centuries before invasion by European powers.

Agriculture is still the major occupation of Indonesians. This video takes us into the working lives of Indonesian landless labourers. We follow the working day of a group of women picking chillies. Landless labourers in rural Indonesia are poor, being paid very little. Work is seasonal and sporadic. Yet there is happiness and cheerfulness that is beguiling.

Animal Production in Indonesia is very much different to that in Australia. Animals are generally housed in small covered enclosures and feed is brought to them. An overview of the cut and carry process of forage harvesting is provided and individual sections on Goats, Sheep, Dairy, Beef Cattle and Buffalo are featured.

While large industry employs many millions, small factories and workshops throughout regional and rural Indonesia are a major source of employment and income. We visit three small businesses: A snack food factory, a raw sugar refinery and a metal working shop producing kitchen colanders.

Rice production has been the basis of Indonesian life and society for many, many centuries. Not only is rice the staple food, its production employs a significant proportion of the Indonesian population. The highly productive irrigated rice system has influenced and powered Indonesian culture. The production of rice from land preparation, planting, growing, harvesting and to processing is explained and illustrated.

Yogyakarta retains a special place within Indonesia, not only politically but also culturally. The dvd features various aspects of Yogya; Jalan Malioboro, an Andong ride, and visits to the Pasar Burung, the Keraton, Taman Sari and the temples of Borobudur and Prambanan. Yogya is a centre for many handicrafts and at night its streets come alive. A truly nice place to visit.

 

Still available is the Belajar Bersama-Language and Cultural DVDs

This Indonesian DVD series has been specifically designed for teachers of Indonesian at primary and early secondary school levels as an active teaching resource. Each one-hour DVD consists of a series of 7 to 9 lessons. The earlier volumes cover basic grammar and language constructs and these  later volumes focusing on more sophisticated language capabilities, and portraying day to day life of Indonesian people and their environment.

The seven volume series was filmed entirely in East Java, with the specific requirements of classroom teachers in mind. The DVDs present the language and concepts  in a friendly and enjoyable manner,  as well as offering  students  an opportunity to  absorb the  cultural richness of Indonesia.
